George, our oldest cat, was hit by a car on Monday evening and I didn't find her until I was leaving for work on Tuesday morning. She was the last of the original three cats that we got 12 years ago.

We have a lot of fond memories of her, but it truly feels like the end of an era. She was a beautiful dark tortoiseshell with a personality that is unforgettable. For instance, in the evening she would come down from the neighbor's woods when we were coming back from the barn after chores. She would trot on by, "mew, mew, mew, mew, mew" - I always said it sounded like she was saying, "No time to talk, got things to do."

Of course, she knew it was suppertime for cats after the barnyard animals were fed.

We knew she wouldn't be with us for a whole lot longer. Since she is an indoor/outdoor cat, she was getting pretty old at 12. Last summer, she was so sick that I thought we were going to have to have her put down, but I tried giving her a couple of shots of antibiotics and she turned around and started acting younger than she had in quite some time.

I am glad though that she didn't sicken and linger like the cat that we had to have put down this winter. He was awfully miserable towards the end. Not the way you want to see anyone - pet, friend or family member - go.

I'm so sorry to hear about George. But you're so right--it stinks to get really old and linger at the end, whether animal or human.

I had a beautiful cattle dog I had to put down the first of the year. She was 8 years old and had hip displasia, was deaf as a door post too. But she was so lively and active, still running around the pasture, suddenly she quit eating and 2 days later was barely drinking unless I spooned water down her. We got her to the vet as quick as they could see us ,to no avail. She was diagnosed with liver failure!! I couldn't believe it. In less than a week she went from chasing the cat to having to be put down.  I guess it was for the best that the illness took her quick, she hated to sit still for long. But it broke our hearts (especially my husband). We still have her brother, he is quite slow and gray bearded but seems content with the life of a "porch dog" since he doesn't get around like he used to.

Oh, Karen, I'm so sorry.  I've lost too many beloved cats to someone's car.  ((Hugs)).

I'm so sorry. We lost our oldest cat to a car last year, too.

Thanks to all for your condolences, and sympathy for all who have lost beloved pets.

I think the hardest part about it was that it was so sudden.  When I came home from work on Monday, DH told me that George had been hanging out with him while he waited for the guy with the backhoe.  That was the last contact our family had with her and I'm really glad that Frank has that good memory of her.

I really miss her when I'm mixing up feed to take to the barnyard, as she would climb up on top of my van and talk at me while I was working.

What a great loss. We are not cat people although we are grateful to the feral cats that are round about that keep our land free from troublesome critters.
None the less we know how it is to lose a loved companion. Ours are dogs and we miss them every day.
But, that is life. Ebbing and Flowing. All things must pass. We can be grateful to be a part of the process.

its hard when you lose any pet, be it a farm pet or a house pet...anyone who loves animals knows that it is like losing a friend...I am so sorry for your lose...I  know within the next year I will be losing my two dogs both are over 10 and I think both have cancer..but until they are in pain I will continue to treat them and keep them with me...both were abused when I took them in and both have done well for the past 10 years with us...to me they are just two my children...so I know what it is like to lose them...again I am so sorry...  but take heart as I believe that they do go to a better place and are waiting for us...
