We've gotten kind of bogged down in doom and gloom lately. There is so much of that in the media right now, so how about a fun topic for a change?

With that in mind, how do you pick names on your farm? Do you have a theme? Do you pick names based on animals' appearance? What?

We try to give our sheep Baa- names. Like Baamadeus, Baarack, Baatiste, Shebaa, Rebaa, Baarny, Baarney, and so on.

We tend to give movie and TV names, too. The new baby is Edmund (because I'm a Blackadder fan) and Meegosh is one in a long series on names from the Movie, Willow, as Ludo (the water buffalo) is from Labyrinth.

And though I'm not particularly religious, I do love Biblical names and have had a long series of those. Uzzi and Aiah at the moment.

When we had our Curly stallion, Slash, we gave foals short names beginning with an "S": Sting, Southwing, Sweet, Shazaam (he wasn't mine), Shade, and so on.

The Roman-nosed goats (Boers and Nubians) often get Klingon names (Kahless, Martok, K'ehleyr) and there is also an Ezri.

So--how do YOU do it?  :o)

Hi Sue-

One of my favorite topics.  I love coming up with names every year.  Lambing is due to start in two weeks so standby for new additions to this topic in the weeks to come.

As you know, we raise California Red Sheep and we had a ram named Tank.  Tank's daughter was...Tank Ewe. Tank Ewe's daughter...Ewe Welcome & her son, The Grateful Red. The Grateful Red is now a herd sire leading to:  Red Zeppelin, Ram Halen, & Sheep Trick.  Oh, and Rude Dude, who is now a herd sire in Canada.

Then there is the ewe pictured in our farm listing here.  Peekabaa Street.

Also, Mia Lamb who we bred to another ram, Eliot Ness, whose daughter we named Kickapoo Joy Juice.

We'll keep you posted on the new additions at the end of the month.

Lynn! You're here! Lynn is from my HFSheep list and just about the most imaginative 'namer' I know.  :o)))

Yes, I'm still around.  I have not been able to get on the HFSheep group since I got the new computer with Vista.  It won't let me into Yahoo at all, it makes me sign in over and over and over and never goes anywhere.  I have missed talking with you.

I am currently among the many unemployed (my boss decided to move to TX) so while I am looking for a job I am currently working on a knit and crochet baby blanket pattern book, and making custom made baby blankets.  Still raising California Reds, although we have had to greatly reduce the size of the herd.

Yay, Sue, fun topic!

We don't seem to have much of a system for naming animals here on our farm, but my daughter and I do have fun coming up with names that seem right for them. We get names from movie characters, or name them to remind us of places we've visited recently, or something that reminds us of when they were born. I also have a baby naming book and (before I loaned it to someone who never gave it back) I had a great book for naming fictional characters that had names from different countries/ cultures.

Soooo, here's a sampling: Shamrock the sheep (born close to St. Patties day); Lily, her daughter (born on Easter day); Tica the duck (hatched during our trip to Costa Rica); Hagrid our big male duck (from Harry Potter); Pippin, our supposed-to-be a beagle, for the hobbit in Lord of the Rings (only he grew to be 80 pounds); Sophie, my horse (because it was close to Smokey, her original name, which I didn't think was a good girl's name); and Joan, another duck (for Joan of Arc -- because she heroically escaped an egg buried under a pile of straw). Oh, and I have a kitty named Bastet for the Egyptian cat goddess.

I don't name many animals. Bulls get names for point of reference and Pride...

so since I've been farming

we've had Big Red, Squirt & Poncho Via, all Hurfords

copenhagain, (scruff bull) Dannial,(semitall)  Slick, 4 letter Bull, Big Black Sambo. (Black Angus.)

Now have a Black angus/Semi named Jack... but he looks like he's bound for another farm.
Most Cows just get a number.

Was name'n this years young after Ships when I named the first Bull born, Victory, and the second Enterprize

Have an old rooster named Surprise..Pullet-surprise

Every Bull my Grandfather ever had was named Ferdanan.
and only one cow was ever named. We called her unis after that woman on Mama's family :)

Hi,

I love naming animals!

I like Biblical names too. I tend to name some of the birds names from the country of their origin (German pigeons get German names). I also name after favorite characters in books and movies. And other times I just name them whatever silly name comes to mind.

This is a fun and interesting topic!

We pick names based on the our goats personalities. For example, we had a set of twin bucks born and the older one chewed on everything so we named him Chewy. The younger one was nameless for a week until my son decided he looked like Yoda!(because of the pointed ears) So now we have Chewy and Yoda. We also have Curious George and Little Lady among many others.
