We recently took a poll of the Registry members. We asked by they had purchased their CA Red and overwhelmingly the answer was for their attractive appearance. The next question was why have you continued in the breed and almost unanimously the members said their disposition. They are generally calm and easy to work with. They are good for both meat and wool and generally have good milk characteristics. I think you would enjoy them and if you want to talk about what you are looking for in a breed we would be happy to talk to you. nmredsheep@live.com is the ranch email.

My aunt is a former dog breeder, responsible for my pair of shiba inus. She lived out in the boonies across from a small goat dairy operation for many years. At that time she had akitas. Once she moved in with her big old stud, Izzy, the coyotes kept their distance. We kids were allowed to roam the farm including the goat pens at our leisure, with Izzy in tow. He never so much sniffed at the goats.
Akitas have a bad rap, and they only seem to be good at herding children in my experience. :P So they aren't a good choice for everyone. They were bred as guard dogs and for hunting bear, so there is no doubt they'll keep their charges safe.
I also know several small livestock operations who have Tibetan mastiffs. They're beasts, but they're good at what they do. They wouldn't be a good choice for warm climates.

| As to the reply about Saint Bernards. I wonder if they would be good? They like people, They are huge and protective of everything around them. Believe me the movie Beethoven did these really strong faithful dogs a dis-service as they were used in my area of Washington State in orchard gaurding for years. We fortunately found out that American Samoyans are just too darn friendly. My Uncle had his beautiful "guard dog" welcome a theif with open forlegs and happy barks. Everything in the truck was gone when my Uncle came out of his meeting. No-one around thought there was a problem as the dog was so darn friendly with the guy moving the tools out of the truck into another one. :o)

Our German Shepard/Husky mixes do a great job of protecting our livestock. But, they have to be trained. As puppies, they wanted to eat the poultry and play with the pigs.
We let them "mark" the outside line of our land and all around the barn area. Although there are plenty of coyotes around, we have never lost our livestock to them.
Plus they have a great temperament, are great around people, and are super loving. They do get territorial though when other dogs show up.
