Just stumbled up these things. They look PERFECT for hobby farmers. I was so worried about coming up with $10k - $20k to build a bigger barn next season but I think these would work and they are MUCH cheaper.

Anyone have any experience with these? For reference:

Around here these type of buildings are just used as an emergency shelter. Usually left in the pasture during calving so the calves can get in out of the wind and wet snow. Especially in bigger pastures that don't have windbreaks of any type.

Around here, they use the third one pictured for veal on the dairy farms. Right now they are getting about $4 dollars per bull calf so to get a little extra money, they chain the calves to one of these huts, let him live for a few months, then send him to slaughter.

You could build a hoop house far cheaper and last far longer for the same square footage that these things would.

******

Tell a welfare recipient they must work and they call their congressman. Tell a farmer he can no longer work and he commits suicide. No wonder 1/2% of the population feeds the other 99-1/2%!!

We tried some of the plastic ones for the goats and they loved them... for jumping on, so when it collapsed we just put up a shed. We use something like the bottom ones on the dairy for the calves until their 2 months old, and we chain them to them. Teaches them when you grab them in the pen that when pressure comes around their neck to stop. Lot easier when treating sick ones.

There are two types of people:Those who can walk away from the farm and those who cannot. Those who can walk away should not walk but run to a much easier lifestyle.

Like drawbar said...dairy industry uses them for veal production.

Depending on what you want to use it for...what about building a low height loafing shed outta rough cut native lumber? If you have a local sawmill around rough cut stuff is super cheap. You could even use the half round end peices which are even cheaper yet. Depends on your needs though.

port-a-hut is used with swine, like along the lines of a "A" shelter for pigs.

I have 6 porta-huts and use them for goats and calves.  They are great and I can move them by myself.
