I got my daughter for the weekend, a 4 year old that is destined to be another farmer that is for sure. Today as we fed and watered the sheep in the upper pasture and she noted how the corn was getting tall. When I suggested we drive the tractor out around the field, she was all for that.

So as we got into a pretty big hay field, I let her drive. Now she is in my lap as we do this, just a small Kubota but she yanks the steering wheel this way and that. Then I suggest she keep turning the steering wheel which she does. Then as we do circle after tight circle in the field, she just laughs and laughs, getting so boisterous that she gets the hiccups. So then we go the other way and for 10 minutes we just do crop circles.

It was pretty simple, but it was fun watching a little girl get so much kick out of such a little thing. Funny how letting a little girl have a little control of her life makes her have fun and laugh.

Tell a welfare recipient they must work and they call their congressman. Tell a farmer he can no longer work and he commits suicide. No wonder 1/2% of the population feeds the other 99-1/2%!!

That is the way a child should grow up. It's a shame all children won't have the opportunity to grow up in the country. I would not trade my childhood in the country for anything. I raised my first two boys in the country, and I'm now working hard to build an idyllic home and small farm for my children yet to come, and for my grandchildren.

Simple joys are the best, IMHO.  It took me a long time to be able to enjoy life and laugh like a child again, after I got too caught up in how busy I was and how little time there was to get everything done.  The rat race had me tight-lipped and ornery.

When my daughter - 3rd and last child - was born, I started slowing down.  I knew she was going to be my last and I didn't want to miss a minute of it.  She has really taught me a lot about joy and grief, laughter and tears.  She's eighteen now and getting ready to start college in just a couple of weeks, but she still knows how to get down on her knees to check out an insect or a flower - and she grabs me to make sure I see it too.

I hope she never loses that the way I did.
