I've modified a lawn aerator (HF $20) that I had to be a Multi dibble (makes holes in tilled soil for planting. If anyone is interested I'll explain how I made the thing.
It will create three rows/pass. The holes are spaced 10" apart on center, 12" between the outside rows and the center row is offset to the middle of the outside rows.

It sounds interesting for sure Wichman. There seems to be a loss when it comes from small garden plots to bigger ones, yet not so big you need large sized planters. Either way I think its great that you modified and created your own planter.

I think what you have has serious merit. They say corn can have seed densities in the 75,000 per acre range without compromising yield. Currently narrow row planters put you at 30,000 seeds per acre, so your planter (assuming it can plant corn) would put the seeds in the 75,000 range.

In hobby farm speak, you could get 30 tons of feed on one acre of land. Not bad!

Tell a welfare recipient they must work and they call their congressman. Tell a farmer he can no longer work and he commits suicide. No wonder 1/2% of the population feeds the other 99-1/2%!!

I like the idea,

I want one of these for carrots and lettuce:

But I think $550 is a bit much for the price tag :P

I agree. Looks like you could make one fairly easy.I might modify it though and have it be pulled behind a garden tractor if I had an acre garden or something????

Nice design though!!

This device does not plant the seed, it marks the ground with small holes. The holes can be used for planting (larger) seed, seedlings (as in cellpacks), onion plants, onion sets, flower bulbs or anything else that needs a consistent spacing. By skipping holes the plant spacing can be adjusted to multiples of 10".
So far I've used this for: Onion plants, bell pepper plants, tomatoes, collards, winter squash, and cantaloupe. Next year I will be using it for my market gladiolusas well.
I just thought someone else might be able to use the concept.
My avatar is a picture of the business end of the device.
