Any antique dealers on here?
As you guys/gals know, my grandmother recently died and I inherited her old brass bed. I am not sure why I wanted it, but I did and while I have NO intention of ever selling it, I was curious as to what it is worth.
No pictures but I can describe it.
It is navy brass by the looks (heavy) and it has patina and some tarnish on it...greenish in spots. The most intertesing part is the connections on the bed rails and side rails...they are cast brass beveled dovetails that interlock together...no bolts or screws here, and they are cast directly into the bed posts and bed rails. These are substantial dovetails...blocks about the size of your fist and pitted and teeming with rough casting marks.
The shape is rather bland...just a regular, rounded headboard with the smaller spindles having little finials in them where they attach to the head and footboards. Size on the posts are 2 inches or so, and probably 1/2 inch on the smaler spindles.
It has an old box spring on it, and while old, I am not sure if this is orginal or not. I suspect not as it is made of steel and riveted together. I suspect the brass bed came with a down filled mattress in its day, most likely suspended by rope...though there are no rope holes in the brass bed rails. These are just cast T shape affairs.

As I said, I have no idea why I wanted the bed, as it is not overly ornate, but being simple sheep farmers...the bed matched my grandparents exactly! Anyway my Dad said it was worthless for anything other then scrap brass, while I think it might be an antique. I mean the cast dovetails is something I have never seen before. Just curious as to what it is worth?

Tell a welfare recipient they must work and they call their congressman. Tell a farmer he can no longer work and he commits suicide. No wonder 1/2% of the population feeds the other 99-1/2%!!

| I'm not sure of worth either but I can tell you that the boxspring with it very probably is the original, years ago I had one too and the spring was the same as what you've described. I gave mine to my oldest daughter and she gave it away as worthless junk (it didn't matter to her that it had sentimental value to me) mine had originally been my grandmother's as well. Have you tried checking Ebay to see if there are any on there to get an idea of what it would sell to get a feel for worth?
Lord keep you arm around my shoulder & your hand over my mouth If God brings you to it, He will see you through it 'The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.'

| Have no idea. But my father-n-law is all about scraping. I gaved him a old cash regeister and he got 10 bucks out of it. GRRR. I end up with two I still have the other one. It dont mean nothing to me as where I got it from but what it means to possably history when my kids grow up its worth taking up e 2x2 section in my grage loft. If you dont plan on useing it and dont need extra cash even if its worth $1000 I would say put it up where you can make sure it wront get wrecked or nothing And just save it. If its worth $500 now how much would it be worth in 30 years for your kids? or take it to a musuem and you might be able to donate it on a contract base as leave it there for a year and get a tax right off. I do like to get money how I can, but if I get somethang for free or pay little for it and its worth $100 or more where I dont need the money it goes up in my loft for my kids. so when they get older if they want to cash in all of the stuff that I saved for them they can use it for down payment, help pay for college or any thing. Just something to think about

| Around here, old brass beds start at $100 and go up a lot from there. I would definitely get in touch with a local antique store before I scrapped it. You might be surprised to find out what it's worth!
