I hate to admit it, but we do buy our fair amount of stuff at Walmart, but the one thing we absolutely refuse to buy is their meat...any of it. To me it just does not look natural. I am not sure whose idea it was to inject that deep red dye into the meat to make it look better, but I think it backfired. Everyone I know of says they buy stuff from Walmart, but not their meat. This included a guy whose wife even works there...they buy everything but the meat.

So you would think the powers that be at Walmart would do something to make the appeal of their meat a little better...they must be losing market share to their competitors because their meat look so lousy and unnatural? I am not saying their meat is bad...it probably passes inspection and all that, but it just seems to me they would cut back a little on the red dye.

Would you guys buy their meat if it was a little better looking? I am not sure I would to be honest with you. Other choices are more expensive, but....

I love vegetarians...slice them real thin, dip them in ranch dressing and they compliment lamb quite well! :-)

Honestly, I do everything I can to avoid Walmart. Almost all of their goods are manufactured in China. They command way too much of the market share and they bring death to all Mom and Pop stores  in the areas they move in to. I try very hard to support local businesses and the American worker by doing my shopping else where.

I too choose rarely to go to Walmart.  Seems like every time my kids just have to have something from there, they are out of it or the line is 230 people long or the service is crappy; not to mention the mom and pop store issue and don't get me started on how they treat women employees!!

That said...I noticed the same colorful tint to the supermarket meat I bought a couple weeks ago because I needed it.  When my goat burger is gone, I will have to search out some other source.  Mary Ann

I only ever bought meat at Walmart a couple times back 7 or 8 yrs ago when the one near me first expanded into a superstore and the meat was so tough you could hardly eat it and the burg was so greasy the frying pan had to be drained twice before it finished cooking. I haven't bought any meat there since and never will again.

The only mom & pop store I have I can't afford to shop at with me only working a couple days a week & hubby unempolyed so my options are to either drive 15 to 20 miles or 45 minutes south for a total of 4 stores to choose from.

The best meat I've ever eatten came from a store that I would have to drive an hour and a half to get to the nearest one. That was Stop & Shop we had one local but being a tourist area business drops off so dramaticlly after Labor Day until Memorial Day that after only 2 years they closed the doors saying they were losing too much money during the off season.

Ever since Sam Walton died the store has never been the same. Walmart is smart because they are the only game in town for most rural communities and we have little options to shop. That being said, I have found that by digging around there are numerous places to find what you want/need but you have to look and travel around for them. Sometimes the price is a little more or it is not "exactly" what you are looking for but is a suitable option. I would rather spend a little more or do without than fund China.

Well it's not like you can take your deep freeze with ya while off. We do a lot of shopping at Wal-Mart, because when you walk out of W/D with 2 bags it's close to a $100.00 and you ask yourself what was made out of gold. The Wal-Mart butchers in Denham Spirngs, LA HATE to see me coming. They know when I pick out a piece of meat, I go up to them and asked them to turn the meat over for me to see. If they don't, I don't buy. I don't know about you all, but the meat comes from a Wilson Cattle Company (down here) or at least it did a year ago.

Mom does that to the Carter's Butcher by her house. One day I went to get meat for her and asked him to turn it over for me and he said Ms. Mona was the only customer that asked him to do it and now me. Then he went quite and said OH your her daughter from the country.

The 2 Walmarts near me have been thru some major changing around and there's a lot that they don't carry any longer or very little selection of what they do carry. Hardly any shoe department left, the craft section has been merged with the stationary & office supply section so no more fabric if I need fabric I now have to travel south to the next state to Joannes. All they did was move stuff around and spread it out so that it still looks like they have as much when you walk in the doors but try to find anything.

I go to Walmart only for utilitary items and only if necessary. I don't generally disaprove of "super stores" because around here the good "mom and pops" still thrive.
I find that grocery items are so generic that I am not thrilled witht the selections.
We are lucky to have a wegman' grocery store and it is terrific. They support local farmers very well , but they of course rely on imported. Produce as well.
The real great news is that we live in a rural area where it's easy to get farm grow vegetables and meat. And to grow a lot of your own produce. Our very favorite local market is the Busti Cider Mill where they not only sell locally grown produce but are one of main producers of local apple cider. Are we in heaven on earth or what?

I buy from Walmart because they will match the price of any local store.  How many other stores will do that.  We have most of our own meat, so I only buy meat when we run out at home.  My sis has worked for Walmart for years.  When Sam was alive, employees were given the option of buying stock in the company.  Walmart employs many people in our area and their local stores make shopping easier for senior citizens who cannot drive very far and who live on limited budgets.  Walmart also matches funds in fund raising events, locally.
