I'm a bit confused buy a rereading of the posts. In a nutshell. some people say that clean barn floors are over rated, and cutting the grass is nothing more than being "upitty". At the same time we think free range chickens running free (and poop'n all over) is good...milk cows into an open pail with no filter and such.
Now I'm not going to kid you. I've eaten more than a few dinners in the barn. Not a snack...but cheese steaks, pizza an such wile milking cows. Dirt is good for us. BUT.. ponder this.
farm critters do carry some nasty stuff. raw milk is a risky, chickens running free were one hand milks is a risk.. hogs are a risk and an uncut lawn, wile it may use less fuel, is still a home for vermin which carry lice that carry sickness.
so why do people sing the song of this healthy way of life and then wonder why they get sick?

| HA - just to clarify. When I say in my signature that 'clean floors are highly-overrated' I'm referring to my HOUSE, not my barn. My barn is kep pretty darn clean. But I'm way too busy feeding, watering, fencing, horseriding, bird hunting, and playing with my kids to worry much about keeping up with Martha Stewart and her Martah wannabe's I agree with you a bit. Livestock carry real threats (as does the family pet on your couch). Prudence is a virtue. But, I do firmly believe that cleanliness can be taken too far. Kids brought up in sterile home environments don't get to flex their immune systems as much during childhood. . . that's not a problem here at Muddy Run!

glad you specified. however again I am kinda sick of this reinvention. nothing personal. Not point at you. BUT then again...if someone is farming and tracking in things why don't they clean more? sure you don't need to have the perfect house per say, but I have many people in my life who justify an unkempt life with ether a "your so snooty" approach or a dirty is healthy outlook. Yes a healthy exposure to dirt is good.
But just like candy to much is bad.
another way to look at it. I know many Amish. Nice people and all but some sects do not wash much. There homes are tidy but smell like crap Literally!
Many of these folks get sick with things you and I do not.
Is this making sence?
the Icon: happy healthy farmer/amish in a painting or on yr postcard
the Justification : I don't live on display, I'm not a snob, it's healthy
The truth: not cleaning when you have animals is risky and animals do carry sickness the salesmen didn't speak of

| I worked in a hospital for 10 years and served 3 years on the infection control committee. There are nasty germs everywhere. Common sense (which is not so common as you might imagine) should prevail, whether on the farm, in the home, or in a "sterile" environment like the hospital! Muddy Run, I agree with you - there are lots more important things in life! My mom used to say, "in 10 years no one will care how clean your house was, but your kids will care how much time you spent with them..."

| ths is true. I just don't see the point in inviting an issue? I also don't like the contradiction that some (not you) make when they talk of a "healthy" almost perfect world, and then go out to step in Poo. I jest but you get the idea. and along with this, the other issues related to orginasation and such lead to fewer vermin ect. can you imagine a dissoginised or cluttered hosbital?

I know what you are saying WOS. I think their are times for each. For instance I do not raise sheep for wool so my sheep are not going to be walking around wearing sheets and hoods to keep their fleeces clean like you see at the fair. (Now to me that is animal cruelty but I digress). So when you see my sheep, their belly wool and haunches are dirty from being in the pastures and lying down.
But I think it is important to have a place to go that is clean. I was shocked when I found out another sheep farmer in the area (commercial) did not have an area that had concrete floors. For me, this is critical to my hospital shed. I want to be able to scrub that floor, get bleach on it to kill bacteria and be able to easily remove all organic matter so that the sheep can get better...not just from foot rot but from any disease really.
As for my home...its a clean home. We typically take our shoes off by the door, never let the dogs in the bedroom areas, and never have a stack of dirty dishes around. But if I need to grab something quick, its not so hospital-like cleaned that I can't run in with my shoes on and grab something. It does not happen often, I plan my house visits, but its livable.
Overall I do strive to keep my place looking neat. It is harder now that I have sheep, but I am not going to have bales of hay everywhere (there is a place for that) nor have trash blowing across the yard, or these funky looking, half built, half derelict structures like you see on some farms/homesteads. I like things picked up, the tools in their places and general organization. But definitely no manicured lawn. I think l nothing of driving tractors, trucks and equipment over my lawn. I'm not that anal!
Everything in moderation!
Eat lamb...because 50,000 coyotes CAN'T be wrong!

| yes but most of the time I hear people say these things about not cutting the grass, not keeping house.. whatever OR they boast of a "clean Green" life and they don't think about the things that the are not cleaning up after.
