I'm putting the final touches on a llama and fiber alpaca book in the Hobby Farms livestock book series and I'd love to include the comments of Hobby Farms forum members who have successfully adopted llamas from rescue organizations.

We planned to adopt our llamas through Southeast Llama Rescue (a super organization; check it out at www.southeastllamarescue.org) but a friend gave us two males instead. One is an adult male they bought a few years ago at a sale barn and the other is his yearling son.

The older male is a sweet guy but absolutely terrified of halters. He's obviously been badly abused at some time. We're making headway (slowly) but he's teaching us why it's wiser and less time consuming to buy a trained llama or adopt through a reputable rescue organization that evaluates their llamas before placement.

Anyway, here's hoping some of you can supply comments for my book!

I don't have personal experience with rescue llamas but have rescued my share of horses and other animals.  It certainly can be rewarding (and trying).  I have a friend who has a fiber shop that sells yarn spun from rescued fiber animals.  The yarn is beautiful!  I often post about her fiber shop on my blog at www.amulticoloredlife.com  If you do a word search for alpaca art blog entries about her fiber shop will come up.
