I am retiring in 1.5 yrs and plan on moving to western NC to finally have my dream of having a small farm. So the big question where do I begin? I am starting to look at property now since the market is good for buying. I am a single woman with grown children so it will be me and my dogs for now. Want to have some farm animals and grow my own vegetables, just not sure how much acreage to buy without overwhelming myself. Also I am into dog rescue so would be involved in that.

Advice please!

littlehouse, western NC is a great area for a farm. The Boone area is a wonderful place and has great prices and value.

The NC Extension Serice is very good and has a lot of information online.  I use them even though I am from Texas.

The main site is at http://www.ces.ncsu.edu

They have many county specific websites which you can find here so you can look for specific information on your county or nearby counties: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/index.php?page=countycenters

The Growing Small Farms website is maintained by Chatham County which is by Raleigh but has info good for most areas.  http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/chatham/ag/SustAg/index.html

Cheers, Paul
