Help our baby chicks are picking one one of there own!  Are turkeys cannibalistic?  Do they just pick on the weakest?  What should we do?  I'm worried they will kill the little guy!

Hello ~

We're sorry to hear about your situation.

According to a several articles on chickens by one of our contributing editors, chickens or other fowl, can develop a habit of pecking other birds until blood is drawn.

This habit can develop when:

1) nutritional needs are not being met properly (ie, underfed or missing nutrients)

2) living areas are too crowded.

Consider making adjustments if you think either of these is a factor.

Another good resource for this question and other is your Cooperative Extension agent for advise!

Let us know how it goes!

We have raised quail before and they did the same thing.  We built seperator pen.  Larger bird would peck smaller birds.  most of the time they would peck the tail feathers out.

seperation worked for us.

I just use a red light to clam my birds. I also have heard a few other colors can do it as well.
