Hi guys! Just thought I'd go ahead and introduce myself. I'm a 22-year-old young woman just outside Milwaukee in an apartment and hoping to eventually have some land to start up a little homestead. For now, I'm making the best of things and teaching myself to cook, bake, and preserve and growing vegetables in containers on my balcony. It's the best I can do, unfortunately. Looking forward to all the things I can learn here, too. :)

I'm in West-Central Wisconsin, just 40 minutes from the MN border, so clear across the state from you.  Welcome to Hobby Farms!

My early years of homesteading were spent in a mobile home on a postage-stamp sized lawn and in an apartment, too.  I rented garden space and learned all I could about canning and preserving foods, plus read and dreamed a lot about the things I wanted to do when I finally got out of town.

It took until I was 35, but I'm really glad of all the things I learned during the years of dreaming.

Karen

Yes, I was most unhappy for a while knowing I'll be stuck in this stupid apartment with a postage-stamp balcony for a while yet, but now I've sort of settled down and realized that this is not time wasted, this is time I can spend preparing. I'll achieve my dream eventually... and my boyfriend (soon to be fiance I suspect) is going along with it because he agrees with me that it's a good way to raise our children (plus I told him I wouldn't have any with him until we at least had a home with enough space in the yard for the kids to play safely and a nice garden to provide them wholesome food).

I'll get there eventually. Thanks for the kind words. :)

We are in a similar situation - 8 years into our 10 year plan to live on our farm.  Right now we sold our house in Florida and are living in our motor home until my husband can get his job transfer and we can move to our farm. (no small sacrifice since the RV ceiling is 6'6' and M. is 6'8'!)

We bought the place 6 years ago (after two years of saving and searching) and have been steadily working on it and planning for our move there.

We have made enormous sacrifices to pursue our dream, but have absolutely no regrets!  Actually, I think having a long term goal has given us something to dream about and look forward to - and it has given us the motivation to save our money and the time to properly research and prepare.

After all, life is just as much about the journey as the destination, even more so when you have the right traveling partner!
