My favorite knife is my Spiderco. I like the serrated edge because I cut lines a lot (rope). I also like the fact that it can be opened one handed with my thumb too.

For a first knife though, I don't know, one of those razor blade knifes are pretty hard to beat. The blade snaps if its doing anything besides cutting what it should, and its always sharp. Replace the blades as necessary.

Never even crossed my mind until now. Hubby perfers the razor blade over his swiss arm knife.

C the razor knives even come in a folding model too, I have 2 different ones and both fold closed and have a locking feature so that they stay open. Where he likes to work with wood & his dad I think that would be the ulitmate.

My Kobalt that I bought at Lowes even has a knife blade too.

And no where he already has a tool kit and likes working with wood I don't think 8 is too young, he sounds like a very respondsible young man.

WOS I've never heard of Case (other than heavy equipment) who sells them?

Case knives are found in every hard ware store here. Just google Zippo lighters. They make the Case knife. you gota know about zippo right?

I think every boy should have a plain old pockeet knife. in fact I gave out nice pockeet knives to my groomsmen, father and Grandfather when I got married. Contrary to the gifts that most men seam to give out and never ever use.. my pals still have there knives.

My father has had dozens of them, and the only one he never lost was that one.

it's just one of those things a boy should have by a give age.

I looked up case and they look good and are made in the USA.

I dont know exactly what a razor knife is but if it is one of those craft sort of knives I would stay away from it for a young lad, the boys tend to use them as screwdrivers, levers and lots of other things that a knife is not designed for. With a razor blade they are really thin and brittle and snap really easily and a bit of it goes flying (maybe into an eye)

I would stay with a proper pocket knife like the case one WOS suggested: www.wrcase.com

Hopefully this works, C this is a picture of a zippo, they're a very nice metal refillable lighter. I have a few of them myself.

The nearest Case dealer to me is in NY & PA

Here is another take on this...

P2 likes to do projects, why not make his own knife? You probably have the steel you need already lying around...a file. Grind the flutes off the file, and then form the cutting edge with the grinder. Refine the edge with grinding wheel, flap disc, then file, honing stone, sandpaper and finally a leather strop. You'll get a super sharp edge that way. After that its a matter of applying a handle which is simple woodworking. Get some fancy wood and shape the handle to his hand, and he will have a first knife that he will never forget, have a story to back it up, and learn about knives in the process.

Just an idea.
