Since the urban farm crowd is slowly trickling in, I thought it might help to have a thread to identify yourself, share your blog (if you chronicle your adventures), and network with each other :) I'd love to hear what other urban homesteaders are up to.

Homesteading in the city. The new magazine is called Urban Farm.
There's usually a big ad for it right along the sidebar ------>

I am a suburban farmer. Just got hooked this year after reading Novella Carpenter's "Urban Farmer". I started with a garden 3 years ago and have worked up to chickens this year. I have managed to put up a freezer full of produce this year and I am hoping to do even more next year. I was really hoping to connect with more Urban Farmers, so I am really excited about this blog. Thanks for including this post

Oh I am so jealous of those who get to have livestock. I want chickens so bad :( Darn ordinances!

you can have chickens in most towns but not roosters. HEll you can even have Hens in NYC. This old house just had a great pces on urban chickens and how so many towns are backing off of that stuff.

Yes, but do check your municipal code first...because mine and most in this area specifically exclude them. I know there is a group next door in Milwaukee working to drum up support to change their law, but it would not include my suburb.

I will be perfectly honest with you, I have never lived in a city or subburb so I am ignorant of most zoning laws (very few here and what little there are are not enforced), but last year at an ag fair I learned about a campaigne called "The right to dry". Now this is where my ignorance really shows, but the guy was saying some municipalities and gated communities FORBID people to use clothes lines!

I just assumed that was a Free Nation Given Right...apparently not!

He went on to say that there are no Energy Star dryers on the market...either propane/gas fired or electric and that the only real "green" way to dry clothes is via a clothes line. That was also news to me.

Now I can see a person CHOOSING not to have the Mrs of the house hang out her unmentionables because of weird people in this world...but to outright forbid it...I don't think that is right.

So for what it is worth, I am truly sorry that you cannot raise chickens or do everything you really want to at your present location. It is supposed to be a free country after all and you do pay taxes. I wish you the best in your endeavors...we need more people like you to provide for themselves...no matter where they live.

Eat lamb...because 50,000 coyotes CAN'T be wrong!

DB,
There are restrictive convents in some areas that prohibit fly the flag, and that's just wrong.

if you have a chicken in a container, (not a roo) who the hell is going to know? and if they do care..tell them go get a life and off your lawn.

yea I saw the banner on the side. BUT to be honest, after years of sales, I hate mags. Everything in a mag is a sales pitch. So little is genuine any more. If I paid the mag $3,000 to write an article about how great I was, I'm sure they would do it. Does that make the article true? nope..

at least if it were a sales flyer in a store It would seem more honest.

any how, Urban farming... whatever... i'm not an urbanite so I won't need to deal with them.
