Along with the Your Goats, Sheep, etc. I would like to have a collection of the GW books though.

RE: Storey Publishing and Garden Way Publishing?

I agree with Gallus. The newer books really are better. They retain the best of the older versions with up-to-date information.

The first place I look for info is in my Storey books.

One thing to add: don't overlook Storey's livestock books for children (such as Your Goats and Your Chickens). They're very well written, amazingly comprehensive, and it's easy to find information very quickly.

Sue

RE: Storey Publishing and Garden Way Publishing?

sleboers (7/23/2008)
Do you know of any list that has the original Garden Way books? I'd rather get the originals and have they Storey books to go along w/ them. I noticed Hoegger Goat Supply had on (Called The Family Cow) that had the original cover, but I'm pretty sure the publishing was under storey.

Unless you're a book collector, I wouldn't bother. I have most of the livestock Garden Way books, as well as the updated Storey's versions. The Garden Ways were good for their time, but most of the Storey's are much better. Some have only minor changes or additions, but others have been completely updated. Whenever I need to look something up, I always grab the Storey's. If it's not in there, it definately won't be in the GW version. I hate to give up books, but if I was looking to free up some space in my library, I'd get rid of the GW versions.

RE: Storey Publishing and Garden Way Publishing?

Just basically ones regarding livestock. Are you looking for specific titles?

Sue

RE: Storey Publishing and Garden Way Publishing?

Do you know of any list that has the original Garden Way books? Save money too.
mommabear

Actually, Amazon (www.Amazon.com) is an even better buy. Sometimes you can buy used copies of favorite books for only a few pennies plus shipping (which is something like $3.85 at the moment). I just bought an absolutely like new copy (doesn't look as though it's even been opened) of Storey's Barn Guide to Sheep for $5.05 including postage.
eBay is better when buying several books from a single seller who offers combined shipping but when going for a single title, Amazon's prices are usually less.
Sue

RE: Storey Publishing and Garden Way Publishing?

sleboers (7/19/2008)
Okay I thought so. So then are the Modern Way to Raising (Insert Livestock here) now Storey's Guide to Raising (Insert Livestock here)? Or are they different. I noticed Storey's Guide to Raising Dairy Goats was the same as Raising Milk Goats the Modern Way.

The Storey's Guide to Raising series are updated versions of the original books. For example, Carol Ekarius helped Paula Simmons update the original sheep book (the title evades me at the moment) so that now it's Storey's Guide to Raising Sheep. In most cases the Storey's Guide to have more information in them than the originals, too.

Sue

RE: Storey Publishing and Garden Way Publishing?

Try Ebay - I have gotten many of the original Garden Way livestock raising books there and also many of the new Storey's.
