Our sould here is hard clay. We are doing raised beds using composite decking material. Where I place the raised beds I plan to loosen the soil and start with a layer of compost so that the dirt below will get better as the compost works it's magic. We used the compost in the flower beds last year and it did a great job of improving the soil.

RE: Want to have a raised bed garden, can I plant corn

You can grow just about anything in raised beds or any other container that is deep enough. They grow corn in hydroponic systems where the corn is grown in a one gallon container without dirt. so yes you can grow corn in raised beds. Just make sure its deep enough and you give enough room between plants. as they grow they might need support to stand tall. Which can be simply done by using a stick and some string. Just tie the string loosely so not to choke the plant.

Want to have a raised bed garden, can I plant corn

I was just wondering if I can plant corn in my raised beds (not actually built yet)I wanted to maybe start on my garden this weekend. I read somewhere to grow corn only in the ground. Does any one know. Also are there any other veggies I shouldn't grow in my raised beds.

The soil here is pretty much all sand. I figured in would be easier to grow on raised beds than to try and ammend the soil.

I am new to gardening, as we just moved from the city to five acres. But in the couple of months we have been here, we've got 17 chickens and a mini horse. Loving the country life...so far.

Thanks, Julie
