becouse that is how many people die from flue every year... I don't know about 1,000's but people die of flue every year.

THis is another falling sky topic, used by someone to advance an agenda.

and a sequence of events is not nececaraly the reason for an end.

Where are all the thousands that are dying? The gubment wasn't able to get adequate supplies developed and millions have not had the vaccine. So where are all the deaths the administration predicted without getting the vaccine? Sure some have died and for that I am truely sorry but people die from flu each year and I'm afraid this h1ni (swine flu) thing is being blown way out of proportion.

It's off subject but hits home never the less.

In my mind I keep coming back to that night in 2007 when P2's lungs were "shutting down." They worked on him from midnight to 5 that morning and then under an oxygen tent a couple days later his Ped Dr told me his wasn't sick because of the "fact" he never had a fever. If the child wasn't sick then why did I rush him to the ER limp as a noodle and about to deck a ER Nurse because she wanted to weight him before seeing a Dr? Never mind the fact he could not stand up on his on and turning blue....okay getting off the soap box...

It's like getting health insurance, if you have any preexisting complications you are denied insurance, but with this flu you may be denied your life.

Besides, this thing could be man made to start off with (by intent or accident).

A life is a life, whether you know that person or not.

Did I mention that I'm getting off my soap box...

ponder this for a moment.. what is to much risk?

I recall back in the spring we had a long thing about raw milk. Now I don't care if people drink it, but I don't think it is what people feel it is. In other words, there are risks not brought up

rather than just calling them "facts"

(sorry I can't do the real air finger quotes as I say the world)

I know about raw milk from actually farming.. not MSNBC or Michal More

some of you risk your personal health and those of your family by choosing your "back to the earth" life styles.

BUT some of the same people will act like chicken little because a talking head on the TV or a man who writes a blog said they might get the flue.

That's interesting.

I've talked to two parents this week who had H1N1 go through their houses and from what the docs told them and how they described their conditions, I'm thinking that my boys had it and I probably did too. None of us were awfully sick and the youngest only had a couple days of it but for the oldest and I it lingered a long time and we were both draggy. Apparently here they are calling everything H1N1 as the seasonal just hasn't started yet. They are finally doing vacine here but I think that since we managed it Ok once and don't have any underlying health issues, we'll just take our chances. We do have appt in a couple weeks to check up something else so I guess if they offer, I may change my mind. I'm so wishy washy on this. Mary Ann

uh yea... people die from the flue every year! but it's not just the flue. It's like drinking and drive'n it kills you if you crash.

We had a local die with this.. however he was already frail, had pneumonia and complications from another defect. Did he have flue..yes.. and this and this and this.

I'm saying don't be a sheep.

now for those of us who don't like gov health care we can see what's what.. it's just a scare to make us be like canada.

isn't this better than a bunch of people just saying.. oh yes.. like brain numbed robots?

We get it already, WOS. Your mind is made up - don't confuse you with the facts.

Young, healthy people - children! - are dying from this flu. If I had family members with health problems that put them at higher risk, I'd be standing in line to make sure they got their shots.

Right now, in Ontario, they are only vaccinating the high-risk population as there is a vaccine shortage. So, even though I would like to get this, I can't. I drive school bus - I will be exposed to it.

Well knocking on real wood...P2 did better with the this flu shot than the seasonal flu shot. After he got the seasonal flu shot, he came down with a different strain of flu. Drs refused to tell us what strain it was. He just gave us a Rx and sent us on our way and told me to hold him out of school for two additional days.

I think there are a lot of other things much more dangerous to the general public than the flu (such as the government that is pushing the vac). Personally, I am sick so rarely that I am not taking it. I have no health issues, no preexisting conditions and figure that the shot is probably more dangerous than not taking it. I do worry when every other minute on TV you see class action suits against this drug or that and now they want to rush a vac thru for the general public. Just where IS the FDA anymore? I wonder just what is in the vac and will they be safe? I also dont trust out government to not put things into them to cause a pandemic and panic. Or even inject microchips so they can "track" the sick people and make sure we are "safe" I have NO faith in our government at all. In fact, I 100% distrust all of them.

I agree.

I.E. think of this vaccine like....a new ride at an amusment park.. it takes a good 1-2 years of being open before all the kinks are work out of the ride....

Or like a new......dog owner (or even parent), you listen to all the books, get all these things you "need" and discover, half of the things you don't need, and after the first dog (or kid) you know how to do things right...

Every night, the news is like, "bla bla, oh swine flu deadly, get a vacine asap. bla bla".....

I wouldn't get the vaccine......first of all, I feel like....the goverment is useing this as a "focus" something for people to worry about, that really isn't as scary as they make it sound.......and the idea of a vaccine is, well, scarry....they're injecting a little bit of the virus into you.......

But this is how I feel...I feel God designed us to be able to somewhat handle these things...the swine flu, is just a flu...

I got swined when I was working in England in August. IT went around the office and hit just about everyone. Put me off for a bit and I worked from the apartment for a day, but wasn't too bad. It seems that it is very easy to transmit but in most people is not too potent. The fear is if it merges with the Asian bird flu which has much greater death rates.

Son and I are still trying to recover from H1N1 two weeks ago - it was nasty. and I worried when a healthy 12 yr old boy is gray and on the couch for a full 7 DAYS - not normal for him for sure. He just couldn't bounce back from it. Now we both have bronchitis and I have a sinus infection - it's like the damned virus won't leave, just chases around the body. In Daughter, it was just a headache and fever for 2 days -- go figure.

Now Husband has it, and it is a worry as he is a recovered leukemia patient so the risk of complications is high.

For those who feel it is gov't hype, I hope you stay healthy. We always get the regular flu vaccine in order to protect Husband, who can't get any shots. But this year there was no H1N1 vaccine to be had in time, so we're dealing with it and praying.

Now, at the doc's today the nurse mentioned that they are even recommending that if you think you've had it, go ahead and get the vaccine. I wonder why - maybe cause people don't really know if they've had it or not (a virus is a virus after all, hard to tell which virus is making you sick)? Or do they feel that the vaccine gives some level of protection beyond just the natural immunity that comes from getting it and recovering? Any doctors out there that can shed light on this? I'd like to know the reasoning so we can decide what's right for our situation.

And according to the health officials I've talked to, those who died from swine already had preexisting conditions that weakened their immune systems, so really was it swine flu that killed them or was the flu just the extra piece.

There have been deaths recently from H1N1 (it is not "swine" flu) of young, otherwise healthy people with no underlying health conditions. One 13 year old, I believe it was in Toronto, this week died 48 hours after first showing symptoms.

I'm not normally one to worry about colds and flu, but this has the potential to be a bad one. Most people who catch it will never know that it's any different than "regular" flu, but some will die from it who would not have died from "regular" flu.

I've had a bug of some sort for over five weeks now, but once it's cleared up, I do intend to get the vaccination. I drive a school bus so I'm exposed to anything that's going around.

NO not horrible parents.

If I understood the spec right, if P2 was under 5 he would of had to get the live vaccine and get it twice. But since he's over the age limit he got the shot and only 1.

Got to look at the pros and cons and then decide what right for your FAMILY.

We talked a lot about this new vaccine with the school nurse and while she is not a Dr by any means, she was very wishy-washy on the subject regarding our 3 year old. At her age, she has to take the nasal spray kind, which is a LIVE form of H1N1 virus, rather then the shots that are the dead virus. That means if she has a strong immune system she should be able to fight it, build up a resistance to new strains, and be just fine. But if her immune system is compromised by a cold or allergies...well we just injected our daughter with H1N1!

We chose NOT to vaccinate her. I know horrible parents... :-)

Well P2 got his N1H1 injection this Monday. So far so good, knocking on real wood here. Both his spec and his ped dr both concurred that is would be in "his best interest."

Hubby got his flu shot this week.

I'll be taking my chances because I can't take the shots. And I wonder where P2 gets his sensitive system from...LOL...

The hubbub is a result of fears over a repeat of the Spanish Flu, a flu epidemic following WWI (1918) that infected around 1/3 of the world's population at that time (500 million infected) and killed somewhere between 50 and 100 million. The big scare is that like the 1918 flu, this new one will mutate into a much deadlier form. The 1918 flu was relatively mild when it first hit, killing less people than the common flu. Later, it mutated into a disease that killed indiscriminately. Normal flu usually kills the young, old, or weak/compromised. The Spanish Flu killed young adults in great numbers by making their own immune systems over-react to the infection (cytokine storm). A lot of the hype is probably (hopefully) just that, hype. If the swine/avian flu does mutate though, the swine flu shot may give your system a head start in the event you are infected. That's a quick run-down of swine flu problem. It isn't what the disease has done in the last couple of years that's scary, it's what it could do in the future. FYI, the 1918 flu epidemic is considered by many to be the worst epidemic in recorded human history.

Be careful...I just had to get an affidavit notarized for our son's health folder at school about the reason behind not getting him the 2nd chicken pox shot so they would not kick him out.

Isn't it ironic that the child who is not vaccinated is the one "at risk", the other kids are "safe" if they are vaccinated and they kick out the kid who is not vaccinated? Crazy rules in this world.

I've been debating this myself. I started taking flu vaccinations when I worked in a residential program for disabled folks. I couldn't afford my staff to get sick and I couldn't count on the client's hygiene. Since then I got cancer and for a while was in the "at risk" group. Now I have kids who are in school and (until this fall) day care and I felt like they could be bringing germs home. I'm the only adult and can't afford to be sick too long. Got the flu within 30 days of moving back to ND two winters ago so took the vaccine last year but apparently it was for the "wrong" version. At any rate, didnt' get sick. I have figured out that I get the flu every 6 years which leads me to figure there is one strain that I am very susceptable to and it comes every 6 years.

However, I am considering taking my chances with this one. Kids are out of day care and going to a smaller school this year and I am (both physically and mentally) much healthier now and may just take my chances. I am moving away from "manufactured drugs" and taking more herbal supplements so I think I will just give them a go. I know the medical research doesn't support immunizations as a causation for autism but I have to wonder about some of it and probably won't expose my kids to it.

Swine flu is a misnomer...this never started from pigs. That is why they have since changed it to the H1N1 Virus because its not swine related. That was done at the pork producers request, but in this case they were in the right. I would feel the same way if H7R8 was the virus and they called it Lamb Flu...I guess it killed the pork industry.

We made a big joke of it here, and every time my 3 year old coughed, we would say "oh no, swine flu". She got to repeating it, and soon every time she sneezed, she would say, "ought oh Daddy, Swine Flu". Then one day we were in the hospital for our other child and she sneezed and said it. Luckily no one heard us or we would be in quarantine now still.

Even then I can't wait to I go to the hospital for something and they ask me, "have you had any contact with other countries"..."why yes I have, lets see there has been a ship from Dublin, Hong Kong, Singapore, Halifax..."

I too think there is way too much hype over the swine flu. There has been swine flu for as long as people have been raising pigs and there will continue to be swine flu.

I never take the flu shots and I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've been sick in the past 35 yrs. I don't believe in using hand sanitizers either, I do wash my hands quite a bit (not as much as I probably should though) I have a soap dispenser mounted outside next to the faucet in the poultry yard and my husband, sister, & I use it alot during the day.

I have the same questions Valerie Jean. One person died in the last Swine Epidemic and yet 30 people died from the vaccine. But who am I to say, I don't take the flu shots either...and seldom get sick ???

Still I do take more precautions now. With my new job I am actually really susceptible to swine flu because I am in contact with ships that sail from all over the world. Since their deck hands handle lines, and I have to handle those same lines, its easy to see that I could get a swine flu from a port halfway around the world...lots of hand sanitizer for me!

But I see what WOS is saying too...switch and bait. Just like now we are dredging up the Guantanamo CIA abuses at the same time the Great Yuppie is slipping WAY below Bush's approval rating for his health care reform debacle.

WOS - I don't understand your response. Do you mean that only the main stream media news is correct or that only those things that make the main stream media is worth listening to?

Please clarify - I love hearing what others think and believe.

I think what she means is the government hopes we will be preoccupied with swine flu and won't notice the campaign promises that are not being kept or notice that the Senators and Representatives have exempted themselves from the healthcare reform that is supposed to be so good for the rest of us, etc.

P2 had his 8 yr check up on Monday.

The flu, swine flu and a 2nd chicken pox shot was all the talk. I understand the reason behind the flu shot and he is on the list. But that doesn't say he will get it because there are only so many that the office will get. The swine flu shot wont be out until Nov and that doesn't mean we will get it here in Washington Parish either. I have to put my foot down on the 2nd chicken pox shot. He had the 1st shot and then got a case of them 21 days later after leaving the hospital with lung trouble at the age of 2. Besides his grandmother who takes care of him while I'm at work has made it 13 plus years with a kidney and pan transplant. If P2 gets the chicken pox shot he can't be around her for 6 wks. The flu is a wk. The swine flu shot, I have no clue how long he can't be around her.

We live in a world class nation washing you hands with soap and warm water and as often as you can, can keep the bugs away. However there is a point when you are too clean.

Keeping fingers crossed.

Well, I've been doing some reading on the swine flu and the vaccine which seems to be coming out. Some of the news is disturbing, some seems to want to create fear in the marketplace, some just doesn't make sense, and with some it's hard to tell who's telling the truth.

For example, there's suppose to be a pandemic and the authorities are running around getting a vaccine to shoot into us, yet, if you check the stats - more people die from seasonal flu than swine flu - so why the hype? According to the WHO and my own health officials the swine flu is rated as mild to moderate - so again, why the hype about the vaccine?

I've read that the vaccine hasn't gone through the rigorous testing most drugs go through - so why are they rushing ahead to give it to people?

Some countries and apparently Massachusetts are making it mandatory! If mass amounts of people don't die from this flu then why make it mandatory? And if the vaccine really does it's job and is safe why are some sites stating that half of the doctors will refuse to take it?

Also, if it is mandatory and one refuses to take it - then what - will they fine you, throw you in jail, put you in detention, give it to you with force? I'm looking for the answers... are you?

As well, I thought we lived in free countries - at least in this part of the world. If I do live in a free country, and I think I do, then do I not have a choice of where I go, what I do and what I put into my body?

I know... some of you are going to say that this sounds far fetched and outlandish - possibly it is. But, unless you ask the questions and seek the answers... how are you ever going to know?

So... I've done a bunch of reading, asked lots of questions and I wondered what the people on this forum thought. Do you routinely take vaccines? Do you care what's in them? Have you been following the swine flu vaccine? How far would you go? Would you refuse to take the vaccine even if it meant you were jailed? Would you take it just to keep the peace, so to speak?

If, as some of these sites seem to indicate there is a movement afoot to do mass vaccinations - will you partake? Will you step up politically and be heard?
