Down in LA, our garlic is already 4" high. But this is garlic that we haven't taken out of the ground from last year.

If you get your garlic in by mid-October, you should be fine. If you are already getting heavy frosts, plan to plant a little earlier next year. The cloves will develop their root systems over the winter, and then you should see good top growth early in spring. It is a good idea to mulch your garlic bed with several inches of straw or other mulch (especially if your ground freezes) to help insulate the cloves.

I was hoping to start some garlic beds this fall and want to make sure I time it right, does anyone know if it's too soon or late to start in NJ? Thanks ahead of time.
