Chuck

it's called a farm Fad, the Deff would be to own the next big thing in animals or the thing somone sold you. (lamas, emus, potbelly pigs, highland cattle)  Horses are always in that file...a constant, but still a farm fad..it's minnie horses, or saddle bread horses, or draft horses..or odd horses.  Look at RFD-TV it's all most all horse stuff after 10am.

I think it is also fuled by the idea that childrens books have put in the heads of urban people.... the illistrations show a horse, along with a duck, A goose, A chickeen, A cow. So what did Old McDonald do for income? He didn't have A milk check, or A egg route...must have hade a job in town....or he was from Canada (aye?)

I'd love to have draft animals, but I'd send them to the Amish when I was not using them.

we run a heard of black Angus/Semmitall cross cattle and the hay to feed them.  a fist full of chickens just to show my kids what peps are like, and a garden packed with stuff..

2 beagles and barn cats all over the place but neather are "pets".

Tipical Pa farm with tons of wild life and the locals claim we have mountain Lion, but I've yet to see them.

Draft horses are so cool. Our local county fair has a horse pulling contest. It is a wonder to behold.

Draft horses are practical animals to have.

Here what is done is to hook up with some reputable Amishmen who take care of the horse the way you like it..they use your animals to do work every day.  I've got a real job becouse we could never pay the taxes on what farming pays... I'd never have time to run horses also.  But then when you want to take a weekend off and play with them, you have horses that are inshape...not fat and lazy :)

I love Oxen, but again, hard to get time to work them with kids and a wife.
